PRODUCE AND PRODUCTS WE MARKET ACROSS THE GLOBE
bulk processed
Avocado oil, frozen puree and guacamole, IQF pieces and dried mango are processed and packed in Westfalia’s processing plants.
AVOCADO OIL
Crude oil, refined oil and pressed avocado oil are produced in our accredited facilities. The oil is marketed to the cosmetic industry and the food industry in both local and overseas markets.
Bulk edible avocado oil is available in 210-litre (191kg) drums. A 20-foot container can fit 80 drums, totalling 15280kg.
GUACAMOLE AND AVOCADO PUREE
Westfalia’s guacamole or avocado purée has a typical fresh, buttery avocado flavour, with a natural, light-green colour. Minimal or no preservatives are added. We have both standard recipes and can produce according to a specific requirement or specification.
Catering or bulk-pack formats include 500g, 1kg (2.2lb) and 3kg (6.6lb) pouches in plain polyester, aluminum foil polypropylene or transparent polypropylene. All packaging is food grade. Frozen purée should be stored in a freezer at minus 18°C (minus 68°F) and then defrosted overnight in a refrigerator for best results. Westfalia’s guacamole or avocado purée is certified Kosher and Halaal.
DRIED FRUIT
Dried mango is produced in BRC-audited drying plants in South Africa and West Africa, with further expansion on the cards. Conventional mango is dried and packed for retail or bulk supply across the globe. Westfalia is the leading dried mango supplier in Africa.
IQF & HPP
Individually quick frozen (IQF) avocado products are prepared from sound, properly-ripened fruit that has been sorted, washed, peeled and de-stoned. The avocado is then cut into slices or diced, with the pieces dipped in a mixture of ascorbic acid and citric acid before being blast frozen. The product is then filled into bags. Packaging for IQF avocado products is in 1kg bags, with six 1kg bags per carton, and 84 cartons per pallet. Other IQF produce options are also available.
High-pressure processing (HPP) technology creates an all-natural and safe process for preserving foods through the use of high-pressure cold water instead of heat, chemicals or other processes that can damage natural flavours. HPP gives avocado purée or guacamole an appetising, fresh taste without the need for preservatives or other additives. The HPP process kills naturally-occurring bacteria, including salmonella, which can cause food deterioration and affect food safety. At the same time HPP preserves taste, texture and naturally-occurring nutrients.

GROWING GEM®
GEM® is a protected avocado cultivar that can only be grown and traded under licence. Westfalia’s research division, Westfalia Technological Services (WTS) holds the world-wide Master Licence for the production of GEM®, as well as the exclusive right to trade GEM® in Africa, the EU and many other regions of the world. GEM® is licensed exclusively to WTS by the University of California Riverside, USA.
GEM® tends to flower prolifically and is a precocious and consistent bearer. It is believed that due to slower oil accumulation, GEM® fruit can hang much longer on the tree without compromising fruit quality. Also, GEM® takes 4-6 weeks longer to reach the traditional maximum legal moisture content for the export of Hass fruit. This stretches the supply of top-quality locally grown avocados closer to year-round.
GEM®
- Late maturing: 4 weeks later than Hass
- Consistent bearer: Yield better than Hass
- Good fruit size: Slightly larger than Hass
- High-yielding, compact trees: High crop loads from an easily-managed tree
- Excellent post-harvest fruit quality: On par with Hass
- Processing: Can be processed into guacamole
JOIN THE GEM® GROWER ASSOCIATION
After several years of evaluating the cultivar in its own orchards, WTS has established a closed GEM® Grower Association. Contact Theo Bekker (WTS Operational Manager, Southern Africa, theob@westfaliafruit.co.za) with any questions regarding Grower Associations.
